Chang Kun House 4 Civil Rights in our Hometown http://htxt.it/GPBT Chang Kun is a Human Rights activist working on HIV/AIDS, HBV and other public health issues. I also take time to care about Civil Rights in China. On 2006, I tried to run for deputy to the local people’s congresses representing district where my university Xinjiang Normal University is located as an independent candidate because deputies to the local people’s congresses representing counties and townships are elected directly by our constituencies. That time I was a Law school student. However, because of my Human Rights actions, Xinjiang Snow Lotus HIV/AIDS Institute was banned by local authorities and I was kicked out of Xinjiang Normal University on Oct,2006.I always feel disappoint I had to leave Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Regions for Beijing and lost the chanse to take part in an election. In the almost two years in the U.S, I have been waching and studying a lot about Civil Rights, and I also have done many works to compare the differences between China and America or other countries. One of the most improtant ideas is I shouldn’t only do works in some big cities, I also should take responsibilities for changing my hometow, my community…… Chang Kun House 4 Civil Rights is a program which mission is to educate on Civil Rights in our hometown and community.

Delays to China’s first govt-backed gay bar: NGO (AFP) – 7 hours ago BEIJING — Volunteers have delayed opening China’s first government-backed gay bar following intense media attention, an NGO said Wednesday, highlighting the still taboo nature of homosexuality in the country. “They were scared their identity would be revealed, that it would lead to misunderstanding and changes in their lives,” said Zhang Jianbo, founder of the Dali HIV/AIDS prevention and health association, the NGO behind the initiative. The bar in Dali, a tourist town in the southwestern province of Yunnan, aimed to provide a place where homosexuals could meet in a relaxed atmosphere and get information about HIV/AIDS prevention, he told AFP by phone. China’s health ministry warned on Tuesday that homosexual transmission of HIV/AIDS was gaining pace. Zhang, a doctor at a hospital in Dali, said raising awareness of the disease among the gay community was “extremely important.” The bar was due to open on December 1

“China’s Mother Teresa Exposes HIV/AIDS Epidemic to the World on AIDS Day” People – Dr. Gao Yaojie Press Conference with Dr. Gao Yaojie, Author of China’s AIDS Plague: 10,000 Letters December 1, 2009 9:00 AM-11:00 AM Hosted by Open Books and ChinaAid Bloomberg Room, National Press Club Dr. Gao Yaojie’s book China’s AIDS Plague: 10,000 Letters was first published in Beijing in 2004 to great acclaim—but the book’s revelations on government complicity in the crisis, and its criticisms of the “blood plasma market” that spread the disease, led to its distribution being suppressed. Five years later, Dr. Gao has updated her book with brand new documents and photos. Edited under highly confidential conditions, the book was published by Hong Kong’s Open Books in November. Dr. Gao Yaojie has chosen World AIDS Day, December 1, 2009, to introduce her book, and address the current condition of the AIDS crisis in China. China discovered its first HIV/AIDS case in 1984. Dr. Gao Yaojie, formerly a professor at the Henan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and one of China’s foremost AIDS experts, undertook a mission to gain a deeper understanding of the situation in rural Henan and hundreds of villages throughout China. Her efforts to publicize and relieve the human cost of the disease and the hardships of the orphans left behind moved the conscience of Chinese society and the international community—earning her the nickname “China’s Mother Theresa, ” and numerous humanitarian awards. Dr. Gao Yaojie has endured limitations on her personal freedom, monitoring of her communications, media assassination and defamation, and harassment of herself and her family members. Following the death of her husband in 2006, Dr. Gao became even more isolated and marginalized, and her personal safety was compromised. With the combined efforts of ChinaAid and U.S. Government officials, Dr. Gao recently left China in secret, bringing with her the truth behind China’s AIDS crisis.
